Seville prepares for the 37th Goya Spanish Film Awards gala

USPA NEWS - One month before the celebration in Los Angeles of the Oscar awards gala, the Spanish city of Seville – South of the country – will present the Goya awards for Spanish cinema this Saturday. Five Latin American films, representing Argentina, Bolivia, Colombia, Chile and Mexico, will compete for the Best Ibero-American Film award. Five other Europeans, representing Belgium, France, Italy, Norway and the United Kingdom, will compete for the Goya for Best European Film. But the attention will be focused on the five Spanish films that aspire to the Best Film award.

'Alcarrás', by Carla Simón – who also aspires to the Goya for Best Director -; 'As Bestas', by Rodrigo Sorogoyen – who is also up for the award for best director -; 'Cinco Lobitos', by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa; 'La Maternal', by Pilar Palomero – a candidate for the Goya for Best Director -; and 'Modelo 77', by Alberto Rodríguez – fourth nominated for the Goya for Best Director -, will compete for the Goya for Best Spanish Film. 'Alcarrás', which was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Film, starts as a favorite in this 37th edition of the Goya Awards for Spanish cinema.

Together with Carla Simón, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, Pilar Palomero and Alberto Rodríguez, the director of 'Manticora', Carlos Vermut, will also compete for the Goya for Best Director. Among the leading actors, Denis Ménochet, for 'As Bestas'; Luis Tosar, for 'In the margins'; Nacho Sánchez, for 'Manticora'; Javier Gutiérrez, for 'Model 77'; and Miguel Herrán, for 'Modelo 77', will compete for the Goya for Best Leading Actor. Marina Foïs, for 'As Bestas'; Laia Costa, for 'Cinco Lobitos'; Anna Castillo, for 'Wild Sunflowers'; Barbara Lennie, for 'The crooked lines of God'; and Vicky Luengo, for 'Suro', will compete for the Goya for Best Leading Actress.

The Goya 2023 will be delivered in 28 categories. In addition, the Goya de Honor will be awarded to the Spanish director Carlos Saura, author of, among others, 'Cría Cuervos', 'Ay, Carmela!', 'Tango, no me dejes nunca', 'Deprisa, deprisa' and 'Elisa , vida mía'. Carlos Saura is one of the most important directors of Spanish cinema, Doctor Honoris Causa from the National Autonomous University of Mexico; Doctor Honoris Causa from the Bulgarian National Academy of Cinema and Theater Art; Doctor Honoris Causa from the University of Dijon; Montreal Film Festival Best Director Award; and the Golden Bear at the Berlin Festival in 1981 for 'Deprisa, deprisa'.

Seville, city for the cinema

Throughout this week, Seville hosts various activities related to cinema. Exhibitions, film music concerts and the main monuments of the city adorned with images of the films nominated for this edition of the Goyas, set the scene for what will be its big night, Saturday, February 11. Actors, directors, technicians and journalists already fill the streets of the city, capital of the Andalusia region.

With great monuments such as the cathedral, the Giralda tower and the Torre del Oro, and typical neighborhoods such as Santa Cruz and Triana, Seville, bathed by the Guadalquivir river, which is navigable from its mouth to this city, is one of the cities a must visit in Spain. Four years ago, the Andalusian capital hosted the 33rd edition of the Goya Awards, which are repeated this year on the same stage, the Palace of Congresses and Exhibitions in Seville.
