THE STORY
San Francisco in 1998, 19-year-old Greg Sestero (Dave Franco) meets Tommy Wiseau (James Franco) in acting classes with Jean Shelton (Melanie Griffith). Shelton criticizes Tommy's performance of a scene from A Streetcar Named Desire, but Greg is impressed by Tommy's fearlessness and the two become friends. On Tommy's suggestion, they move to Los Angeles to pursue Acting Careers.... Tommy writes a Screenplay titled The Room, a Melodrama about a Love Triangle between Banker Johnny (played by Tommy), his Fiancée Lisa and his Best Friend Mark. Greg reluctantly accepts the role of Mark and as an Associate Producer Credit. They rent out a Production House; Tommy insists on buying all the Production Equipment and shooting the Film on 35 mm Film and HD Digital simultaneously, costly and unnecessary measures....

OUR REVIEW
Like Tommy Wiseau himself, James Franco produces, directs and stars in his magnum opus, recreating the Chaotic Production of an Unintentional Comedy that has earned Rocky Horror-style Cult Status as “The Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made“. An Ode to Bad Taste and Dubious Intentions, the Ha-Ha Comedy “The Disaster Artist“ involves one of the favorite Topics of the Movies: Itself. It´s another Story of Crushed Hollywood Dreams.

James Franco certainly looks the part and sounds it too, having perfectly captured TommyWiseau´s puzzling accent and arrhythmic intonation. The making of “The Room“ gives “The Disaster Artist“ its point and much of its Broad Comedy. Filmmakers love making Movies about Movies, and James Franco is no exception.
